Professor Lau is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was awarded Honorary Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2003. He was President of Asian-Pacific Hepato-PancreatoBiliary Association for 2009-2011, and was awarded Honorary Fellow of College of Surgeons of Hong Kong in 2011. He became Chairman of The Medical Council of Hong Kong for 2012-2015. He was awarded Wu Jie-Ping Medical Prize in 2012 and the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2013.
